Hero at one of her favorite lakes on Friday
Today I made the agonizing decision to say goodbye to my much-loved Hero. She has been my constant companion for more than 14 years. She's been wild and fun, spunky and sassy, independent and aloof, but mostly she's been an incredible friend.
Hero was sick for only 3 days. Despite her 14 years she was in great health with just some mild arthritis and moderate hearing loss. She still wanted - I mean demanded- her daily walks. She loved the trails and ponds in our neighborhood. Lately, we've been hiking at Hemlock Bluffs Nature Preserve; it's got some steeper trails & I've been going there to get ready for the Gratitude Hike.
Just last weekend, at Hero's request, we were sprinting full throttle at a trail near my house. I could barely keep up with her.
Over the last week I noticed she wasn't as interested in her food. Wednesday this week she didn't eat at all. By Thursday morning, I knew she was sick and took her to the Animal Hospital at Peak Plaza where the wonderful & compassionate veterinarian Dr. Lindsay Warner has cared for her. Lots of tests later, a small but aggressive tumor was discovered on her heart. They said it had probably only been there a couple weeks at most. It was causing bleeding around her heart and it couldn't be removed. At Hero's age, heart surgery was not something I was interested in anyway.
I was given the option to attempt to provide Hero some relief by draining some of the blood that had collected around her heart. At most it would give me a little extra time to spoil her, but there was no cure.
The procedure worked and I am so incredibly grateful for these last couple days spent with Hero. We had visits from family & friends. Hero swam & relaxed at her favorite park where we used to hike around the lake for miles and miles. She ate chicken and mini-powdered sugar donuts. But mostly she was home, with me and Louie. Right where she loved to be.
After going through it a million different ways in my head, one text from my dear aunt that said, "There is no wrong decision," a call from a friend this morning that helped me realize that this truly is the hardest thing I'll ever do, I looked into Hero's eyes and knew I had to let her go.
I am sad, so sad to lose this friend who has been with me for longer than any other friend I've known. But I am also grateful for so many things:
- She had 14 GREAT years and was only truly sick for a few days
- She got to spend her last nights at home in her own bed(s) (she has several around the house!)
- I was able to be with her all day on Thursday while she was tested, poked and drained
- I held and kissed her for her very last moments
Louie and Hero on Friday
Without Hero I am not sure I would have ever ventured into the woods or enjoyed the numerous parks, trails, hiking areas, lakes & ponds in our area. Without Hero's insistence at walking no matter the weather, I may never have discovered the feeling I get when we take our walks and the beauty of being outside in all seasons. I may not have accepted my invitation to the Gratitude Hike, because I never would have considered myself the mountain-hiking type before Hero!
Hero's adventurous spirit is a part of me now and I intend to honor and remember her in ways that meant the most to us both: Running, hiking, splashing in the lake, sitting on the porch, tipping my head into the breeze.
I also intend to carry her spirit with me on the Gratitude Hike. It is Hero I'll be hiking for that day.
I have discovered this week that the heartache we feel is equal to the depth of the love we shared and I wouldn't have it any other way.

Moved beyond words, Erica. Thank you for giving us a bit of yourselves. While I continue to search for words, all I can say is that Hero was received as much as she gave, that much is clear.
ReplyDeleteThank you Tom! That is so true, she was pretty special to all that knew her.
Deletebeautiful tribute to a good friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you Jodi, I appreciate your kind words.
DeleteBeautiful tribute, Erica. I loved what you said at the end. I can't imagine what you're feeling tonight but I will help you celebrate Hero on the hike. I just have to believe that our beloved dogs will be with us again. What wonderful gifts you gave each other.
ReplyDeleteI believe that too Mary! It couldn't be any other way! She was something else. Looking forward to celebrating Hero.
DeleteI agree with the rest of them Erica, that was a very loving tribute to your dear friend Hero. I'm happy for you that it was a healthy love filled life and a short illness, it is especially hard to watch them suffer. The last day is the worst & hardest day of loving a pet and no matter how many times you have to go through it does not make it any easier. I'm sorry for your loss but happy for your memories.
ReplyDeleteThank you Donna Jean. It helps so much to know that others know this feeling too. I appreciate your kind words.
DeleteWhat a wonderful view into the life and love you shared with your Hero. It truly is one of the hardest things we ever have to do for our fur friends. I am sorry for your loss and know that Hero will forever be in your heart and soul the rest of your life.
ReplyDeleteThank you Linda! I am so grateful that her memory lives on!
DeleteThis brought tears to my eyes. I know that Hero lives on in you, and that she has added new dimensions to your life. I am sorry to hear she is gone but I am happy that you have had a beautiful friendship and that she led a wonderful life with a wonderful human. She definitely lives on in your heart. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading & commenting. I hate to hear I've made people cry, but I'm glad you were able to share Hero's story.
DeleteThank you Erica for sharing your wonderful tribute of love for your dear Hero who will always be with you. I had my Molley B an 18 year old cat who like your Hero went places with me no other cat or dog has gone since. She will always be special and I'm so glad that you have Louie with you know. Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I feel an kinship with you because Hero sounds just like my Molley. I know that the last few day are the best and the worst but she was with you and that the gift of comfort that you gave to each other. I'm so glad you will be taking this hike. I wish you love and future happiness as you and Louie go forward with your memories of Hero. Your all in my prayers. <3
ReplyDeleteThank you Deborah for your kind words & your prayers! It sounds like Molley B was a special cat & much loved as well.
DeleteErica, what a sweetie your Hero was and what a great life and 'ending' you allowed her. I'm sorry for your loss and glad that Louie is with you for comfort.
ReplyDeleteRebecca
Thank you Rebecca! It means a lot to hear from you and so many others. I am so grateful for Louie as well.
DeleteErica, I am so very sorry for your great loss, but so very glad you had such an amazing friend in Hero. Please know that the years you had together, the love you shared, is probably why you had her for as long as you did. No one could have given her a better life. I am so happy that you have such great memories...and I know you will be with her again. Please take care of yourself. <3 <3
ReplyDeleteHero did have a great life, but I think I am the one who won out on all the blessings she brought me and all who knew her. Thank you for your kind words Donna!
DeleteErica, I am so sorry. You wrote beautifully about your friend. I went through this last Thanksgiving, fitting because I was so thankful for my 13 years with my Corgi. You will always carry Hero with you and she will never be more than a thought or a tear away.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. I am sorry to hear of your loss. It is truly a bittersweet thing and I agree, they are always in our thoughts! Take care.
DeleteErica, beautiful words. I have a 14-yr old lab who I know will be leaving me soon. She has several health issues, but still enjoys life and being home. A dog truly is a best friend. May we be worthy of their love.
ReplyDeleteKaren, thank you for commenting. It sounds like your lab is well loved and cared for at 14 years! Enjoy your time with her, I'm sure Hero is looking over her now.
DeleteSuch a wonderful tribute to your faithful companion and family member, Hero. My heart breaks for you as we had to come to the same gut-wrenching decision just last year. We had to say goodbye to our beautiful Yellow Lab, Zoe. She, too, was 14 years old, dealing with Lymphoma. It was a tough decision, and still cannot believe she is gone. Hero had a wonderful life with you and Louie!
ReplyDeleteThank you Jayne for your kind words. 14 years is a long time & it's hard to adjust to them not being here with us. I'd like to think that Zoe & Hero are enjoying each others company tonight!
DeleteYour beautiful tribute made me cry. I know you are hurting and my heart goes out to you. It is so very hard to lose our friends. If only our animals could live longer lives. I do believe you will be reunited with Hero...till then you are both in my thoughts and prayers. What a great home Hero had with you.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your thoughtful comments. I had the best 14 years with Hero & can't wait to see her again!
DeleteErica, you are a wonderful writer and this is an amazing, touching tribute. Thank you for sharing Hero's story.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Dr. Warner. I am glad you were able to read the tribute, but even more grateful you were the one guiding us in those last precious days with Hero.
